Cannon Law_ Long live the Short lived bands

How many things in this lifetime do we start and have to give them up because we "unknowingly" overwhelm ourselves....again. I think this is pretty common for people who have a lot of interests. On the one hand, it seems like a lot of time could have been saved with a willful "No", but on the other, memorable experiences (like playing in front of an audience) and new friends are always gained from these endeavors. So, here's the story of Cannon Law.

Canon Law is a perfect example of that band who found each other through a like passion of music (and craigslist), committed to practices, agreed upon a name ('Canon Law' is a law from the Catholic doctrine meaning "eye for eye"... in few words or less. Inevitably this band will have to go their separate ways because of personal priorities. There are always the guys or girls whose lives only afford them enough time to play for fun, versus those who can pursue becoming the next great cover band (and apparently you can make pretty decent side money at bars).

Regardless of Canon Law's situation, they did get to play a show together a few weeks ago for Kristy's birthday in Mesa, AZ. And whether or not they can pull off a few more shows, I think everyone has had a good time shaking the walls every week at the CA Ramp Works Warehouse. . And, apparently Gray was playing real well this night, because Spring said "Yes!" to his proposal. Congrats you two! What a night!

Sushi Review (Gilbert, AZ region)

In my opinion sushi takes the cake when it comes to a dining experience. Between the green wasabi, rainbowed strips of raw fish, and shots of sake, it is worth every cent. But, there are always exceptions to the rule.
For instance, I've had to settle with the fact that Arizona sized portions of sake are very small (due to the strict drinking laws around here). A bottle of sake is 6 to 8oz. This is the largest! There is nothing I can do about this, but alongside crappy service, and tiny sushi rolls... the points definitely go down a few in my book. I like the fish to be so fresh it melts in my mouth, and a good variety of new rolls to try is also a plus. I have eaten at many a sushi places, so if nothing grabs my attention I probably won't be back. Since in Arizona (one month and a week today) I have been to four sushi places in the Gilbert region (15-20 minutes east of Phoenix), and would like to grace you with my expertise.

I have lots more to try, so keep checking back for my subjective, yet seasoned opinion.

1. The Blue Wasabi- Needless to say, the wasabi's blue color is their trademark. It is open late,
has a good vybe, good menu, and great service. Definitely recommend the Dirt Sanchez roll.

2. Sushiya- Flashing Christmas lights which hung from the window are actually what grabbed our attention, as we were aimlessly looking for another sushi place. Turns out, like the flashing lights, it was nothing new or grandiose. Definitely recommend for the happy hours though. We missed this, but need to go back for the bottle of sake and edamame for only a buck! The tables are equipped with a slideshow menu of rolls, which is pretty cool for visualizing.

3. Way Sushi- A pretty good sushi restaurant. Recommend this place for a weeknight where you just want friendly service and a more quiet atmosphere.

4. Sushi Ave- We heard good things about it, but our experience was a 6 oz bottle of sake (only 2 shots each), horrible service, not much of an atmosphere, and tiny rolls.

A New Chapter- Phoenix Dirt City Zine

There is something beautiful about watching my bank account whittle down with absolutely no income coming in. For some reason I am not worried. Maybe it is the sheer fact that I have never been ahead anyway... even when I had the full-time job with benefits. Or maybe it is faith, knowing that God always meets me where I am at.

Speaking of, Dirt City Zine has started a new chapter based out of Phoenix, AZ.

I am not quite sure what I will be inspired to cover yet, this has yet to be revealed; but nonetheless, I am excited to unveil the new location with fresh eyes... Dirt City fashion of course. What does this mean? This is not some yup yup Zine trying to fill space with the latest trend or gossip. The articles are informational but real in the fact that they accompany my everyday life... not some statistical data of a target market I should be trying to write for.

When you are at "the bottom" of the economic bracket, there is only one way to look-UP- maybe that is the somethin' beautiful about where we are at.

By the way, this article was inspired from my fiance Dug... he was trying to encourage me with an article he read this morning on CNN.com- as I decide where my new career direction will take me. It actually ended up depressing me more, because I don't feel like I am taking the ol' "do what you love" route with the interviews I have lined up, but on the other hand- it got me writing.
